Insight

Brooklyn marks a significant architectural milestone with the completion of its first supertall skyscraper by SHoP Architects.

This monumental 1,066 ft (325 m) structure, named the Brooklyn Tower, impressively stands out in New York City’s ubiquitous skyscape. The tower’s unique design prominently features blackened stainless steel, copper, and bronze façade elements which serve to incorporate the Dime Savings Bank, a 115-year-old historic structure now designated for retail and amenities.

While the tower boasts of 93 floors, a majority are dedicated to residential units. Its design is a refreshing deviation from the common glass edifices in NYC, drawing inspiration from the Dime Savings Bank building that it envelopes.

Notably, the pilasters crafted from blackened steel, copper, and bronze accentuate the tower’s height, with their verticality extending beyond the flat rooftop. At the street level, marble columns with a distinctive ‘convexicave’ design rest on black granite bases, resonating with the Dime Savings Bank’s aesthetics.

Moreover, the transition of the façade from convex at the base to concave higher up, enriched with golden metallic accents, enhances its visual charm.

Inside, the residential lobby emanates the essence of the Dime Savings Bank, thanks to a collaborative design effort with Krista Ninivaggi of Woods Bagot. Here, the wood flooring bears geometric patterns reminiscent of the bank’s interiors, while Liberty Dimes grace its ceiling.

The Brooklyn Tower offers around 550 residences, ranging from cosy studios to spacious four-bedroom homes. These residences are a blend of luxury and elegance, with interiors featuring granite countertops, oil-rubbed bronze finishes, and premium appliances from brands like Bosche and Miele. The dwellings promise stunning vistas of Manhattan and the encompassing NYC horizon.

Residents can also enjoy a plethora of amenities, the highlight being the Western Hemisphere’s highest basketball court. Other features include a dog run, outdoor playground, Sky Lounge, and Sky Park, each offering panoramic views of Brooklyn and beyond.

Initiated in 2018, the construction of the Brooklyn Tower was steered by the JDS Development Group. The development, which seamlessly combines modernity with history, was executed at an estimated cost of $750 million.
