Abstract

Translucent concrete panels are revolutionising modern architecture by offering a unique combination of strength, aesthetics, and energy efficiency. This innovative material integrates light-transmitting plastic optical fibres (POFs) within concrete, allowing natural light to pass through while maintaining structural integrity. Recent advancements in POF treatment using hydrofluoric acid have significantly improved the fibre–matrix bond strength, enhancing both durability and mechanical properties.

Research indicates that treating POFs for various durations increases surface roughness and adhesion while reducing tensile strength and elongation. The resulting translucent concrete panels demonstrate superior performance, with compressive strength increasing by 28% compared to untreated POF concrete. Additionally, the material achieves a light transmission rate of approximately 3% at a 15 mm fibre spacing. A panel measuring 600 × 300 × 50 mm can provide daylight illumination of around 75 lux, aligning with recognised visual standards.

Practical applications of translucent concrete panels span across architectural and infrastructural projects. In contemporary building design, they are used for striking facades that enhance natural illumination and reduce reliance on artificial lighting. These panels also contribute to sustainable construction by improving energy efficiency, thereby reducing electricity consumption. In interior spaces, translucent concrete is employed for decorative walls, partitions, and flooring, creating an open and light-filled atmosphere.

Beyond aesthetics, translucent concrete panels offer functional benefits in infrastructure. They can be integrated into roads, pavements, and driveways to enhance nighttime visibility, improving safety in urban environments. The material’s ability to combine durability with energy-efficient illumination makes it an ideal choice for modern, sustainable construction.

With increasing demand for innovative and eco-friendly building solutions, translucent concrete is gaining recognition as a transformative material in architectural design. Its ability to merge aesthetics, structural performance, and sustainability makes it a valuable asset in contemporary construction.
