Info
This book, entitled ‘Handbook of Sustainable Concrete and Industrial Waste Management’ and subtitled Recycled and Artificial Aggregate, Innovative Eco-friendly Binders, and Life Cycle Assessment, edited by Francesco Colangelo, Raffaele Cioffi, and Ilenia Farina, is a very ambitious effort to incorporate in a single document most of what has been learned on the use of alternative materials in the production of concrete mixes with an environmentally-minded compromise.
The authors of the book made a serious effort to summarize the results of the literature and of their own research, published in international conferences and scientific journals, in 31 eclectic chapters. The subjects are treated in a self-contained way, meaning that each part and chapter of the book can be read and understood independently, but at the same time, the chapters are organized so that they are complementary and avoid unnecessary repetitions.
The book itself is written in a pedagogical style where the sequence of presentation of the various parts helps the readers to understand the barriers that need to be overcome in order to make concrete more sustainable. In my opinion, this book has the quality and scope to be a leading reference in the literature concerning the general issue of converting an already efficient material (concrete) from a technical performance point of view to an all-around optimal construction material, as seen in the last 120 years.
Progress without economic and environmental costs is an impossibility but works such as this book contribute to help minimizing those negative consequences of providing people all around the world with decent housing and infrastructures.
