Can adding a small amount of water to a concrete truck really cause long-term durability problems?
Yes. In most cases, adding unauthorised water after concrete has been batched increases the water-cement ratio, which can significantly reduce compressive strength, durability and resistance to water penetration, while increasing the risk of drying shrinkage and cracking. Although the concrete may appear easier to place and the slump may still look acceptable, its long-term performance may already have been compromised. A common misconception is that an acceptable slump confirms acceptable concrete quality. In reality, slump measures consistency at the time of testing; it does not verify that the concrete will achieve its specified engineering properties or long-term durability.
When concrete becomes difficult to place, experienced inspectors do not immediately approve the addition of water. Instead, they investigate the underlying cause by checking delivery time, transport duration, concrete temperature, time since batching, fresh concrete test results and compliance with the approved concrete mix specification. Identifying the cause of reduced workability is far more effective than masking the problem by adding water. Where additional workability is genuinely required, it should only be achieved using the procedures permitted by the project specification or approved by the concrete producer. Unauthorised water should never be added simply to make concrete easier to place.
