Devoted followers might remember the much-celebrated Blooming Bamboo flood-resilient dwelling by H&P Architects. Ten years on, the Vietnamese design firm has crafted a rather analogous prototype, a bamboo floating home, purposed for communities residing near water bodies and facing threats from climate change, with a specific focus on those inhabiting Vietnam’s Mekong Delta.

Constructed primarily from bamboo stems, the Floating Bamboo House incorporates other lightweight elements such as compressed woven bamboo sheets, leaves, corrugated iron, and bamboo screens. These materials are unified using uncomplicated latches and ties, while plastic drums affixed to the underside of the dwelling allow it to float.

“Vietnam is among the countries hardest hit by climate change globally,” asserted H&P Architects. “Projections suggest that 47% of the Mekong Delta region and 13% of the Red River Delta region will be inundated by a sea-level rise of 1 metre [3.2 ft], impacting 20 to 30 million people directly. The Floating Bamboo House is seen as a viable alternative, enabling millions of impoverished households to swiftly establish secure and stable homes, while preparing for the worst-case climate change scenario.”

The Floating Bamboo House spans 36 sq m (roughly 390 sq ft) and features a versatile interior layout over two tiers. Although rudimentary at the prototype stage, the design will eventually accommodate a kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms, and will be outfitted with freshwater storage and septic tanks.

Moreover, the upper floor panels can be detached, transforming the space for use as a classroom or library. Its façade is designed to open in several areas, enhancing daylight entry and natural ventilation. The structure is crowned with an extensive roof, intended to house a rainwater collection system and solar panels.
