How often do we hear this appeal? If you are like me, I tune out, sadly. But three recent examples challenged my cavalier attitude and caused me to consider the real power of listening.

The first example is a movie, The Best of Enemies, which is a dramatization of an initial attempt to desegregate public schools in Durham, North Carolina.

Based on the book of the same title by Osha Gray Davidson, the film focuses on the real-life examples of C.J. Ellis and Ann Atwater. Ellis, president of the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan, and Atwater, a civil rights activist, do not see eye on anything.

Yet through a charette, which is a group problem-solving process, come to see themselves and their roles differently. The film features scenes of participants from both sides of the issue, engaging in dialogue and seeking joint solutions.
