Brief

Royal College of Art graduates Paul Mendieta and Beren Kayalı designed a flat-packed, inflatable water storage tank called Deploy. Made from a patented material called Concrete Canvas, it can hold 14,000 liters of water and has an expected lifespan of 20 years. Deploy recently donated 14 tanks to victims in Turkey following major earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria on 6 February.

Insight

Royal College of Art graduates Paul Mendieta and Beren Kayalı have designed a new water tank called Deploy that can be assembled and inflated on-site in just 48 hours.

The structure can hold up to 14,000 litres of water and has a lifespan of 20 years. The tank is made from a patented material called Concrete Canvas, which is formed of cement layered between fabric and a PVC liner. The tanks are air deployed from a helicopter to the ground, where they are assembled and installed by a team of two people.

Deploy recently donated 14 tanks to victims in Turkey following major earthquakes that left communities vulnerable to waterborne diseases. The tanks have detachable lids and a floor-level outlet valve for easy cleaning and maintenance. The material is self-repairable from punctures, with the shape recovering once filled with water.

Deploy aims to assist rural communities with water requirements and resolve logistical issues for farmers, infrastructure projects, and disaster relief occurrences. The tanks can fit on a standard pallet and be transported anywhere in the world.

Concrete Canvas

Concrete Canvas is a patented material made of a cement-impregnated fabric that hardens when hydrated to form a thin, durable, and waterproof concrete layer. It is pre-rolled for easy transportation and widely used for slope protection, erosion control, ditch lining, and water storage. It is often utilized in disaster relief scenarios due to its quick deployment and self-repairing capabilities.
